    L. Badia, M. Conti, K. Das, L. Lenzini, H. Skalli Routing, Interface Assignment and Related Cross-layer Issues in Multiradio Wireless Mesh Networks 2009 in Guide to Wireless Mesh Networks  Springer London, February 2009, pp. 147-170. inbook DOI URL
Abstract: Many technological standards for Wireless Mesh Networks include the possibility to use several nonoverlapping channels for data transmission. This represents an opportunity that can be exploited by equipping the terminals with multiple network interfaces. This opens up an interesting challenge, namely, how to simultaneously use different frequencies, so as to limit collisions and therefore activate multiple simultaneous transmissions in the same geographic area. At the same time, this poses new issues; for example, network connectivity is reduced, because nodes that do not interfere are also unable to communicate with each other. Thus, more complex interface management techniques are required. Moreover, a paradigm shift from the classic routing schemes is needed. Usual approaches are not always satisfactory because they often use shortest-path heuristic and tend to concentrate transmissions to certain nodes. To efficiently exploit the presence of multiple channels instead, a proper routing algorithm should avoid congested links and possibly make use of an estimation of the actual network traffic. Therefore, cross-layer information exchange can be useful for an efficient functioning of the routing protocols. In this chapter, we will analyze all these issues and propose and identify possible solutions.

    G. Anastasi, M. Conti, E. Gregori, L. Lenzini Real-time Applications in a CRMA Network: a Performance Analysis 1994 Elsevier, pp. 871-879, 1994.  inbook
Abstract: This paper analyses bandwidth allocation schemes for managing real-time applications (Variable Bit Rate video and voice) in a CRMA network. A methodology to compute the Quality of Service (QoS) experienced by variable bit rate (VBR) video and voice sources is proposed. As VBR video applications only tolerate extremely low packet loss rates (< 10-8), we need a computational approach to estimate very low tail probabilities. Studying the QoS with a simulation technique is not feasible, because computational costs make it almost impossible to estimate tail distribution probabilities lower than 10-2-10-3. Therefore, to achieve this target, we propose a model which represents a CRMA network's worst case behaviour (i.e. a scenario with maximum network congestion), and which can be solved analytically. By solving this model for different bandwidth allocation schemes, we can obtain the corresponding bounds on the QoS experienced by VBR video users. Finally, for those bandwidth allocation schemes which provide an acceptable QoS for VBR video traffic, we also estimate (via a trace-driven simulation) the QoS achieved by voice users.

Abstract: The IEEE 802.16 is a leading technology for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA), where a Base Station (BS) provides a set of Subscriber Stations (SSs) with first-mile network access. Each SS has multiple connections directed to the BS, which are assigned bandwidth on a demand basis. Specifically, the BS allocates part of the channel as request slots, which are accessed by best-effort connections in a random access manner to transmit bandwidth requests. Although bandwidth requests sent by different SSs may collide the standard does not specify an explicit acknowledgment mechanism. This, and the bandwidth being assigned by the BS to each SS as a whole, may lead to critical inconsistencies between the perception of the SSs? requirements at the BS and the actual SSs? requirements, which in turn may entail SS service disruption. While the standard suggests that an SS should regularly update the BS about the backlog of its connections, the algorithm to do so is left unspecified. In this paper we propose a simple, yet effective, mechanism to be employed by the SSs, called Bandwidth Request Reiteration (BR2), which prevents deadlock from occurring. Using detailed packet-level simulation, we compare BR2 to an alternative approach based on timeout, and show that BR2 achieves better performance, in terms of the average transfer delay, while it does not incur a significant additional overhead, in terms of MAC signaling.

Abstract: In this paper we address the problem of finding end-to-end delay bounds for single leaky-bucket shaped flows subject to FIFO multiplexing in tandems of rate-latency nodes. More specifically, we focus on a methodology, called the Least Upper Delay Bound (LUDB) method, which is based on Network Calculus. The latter has already been used for computing delay bounds in tandems in which the paths of the flows are subject to particular restrictions. In this paper we generalize and extend it to tandems traversed by flows following arbitrary paths. We show that such methodology yields better bounds than those obtained through both per-node analysis and comparable methods proposed in the literature.

Abstract: IEEE 802.16 is a recent IEEE standard for broadband wireless access networks. In IEEE 802.16 networks, the medium access control (MAC) protocol is centralized and explicitly supports quality of service (QoS). That is to say, access to the medium by a number of subscriber stations (SSs) is centrally controlled by one base station (BS), which is responsible for allocating bandwidth to several MAC connections in order to provide them with the negotiated QoS guarantees. However, although the network can be operated in frequency division duplex (FDD) mode (that is, transmissions from the BS (downlink) and SSs (uplink) occur on separate frequency channels), the standard supports SSs with half-duplex capabilities. This means that they are equipped with a single radio transceiver which can be used either to transmit in the uplink direction or to receive in the downlink direction. This may severely hamper the capacity to support QoS. Therefore, in order to allocate bandwidth, an IEEE 802.16 BS has to solve two related issues: (1) how it can schedule bandwidth grants to SSs in order to meet the QoS requirements of their connections and (2) how it can coordinate the uplink and downlink scheduled grants so as to support half-duplex capabilities. In this paper, we derive sufficient conditions for a set of scheduled grants to be allocated so that the transmission of each half-duplex SS does not overlap with its reception. Based on this, we propose a grant allocation algorithm, namely, the half-duplex allocation (HDA) algorithm, which always produces a feasible grant allocation provided that the sufficient conditions are met. HDA has a computation complexity of 0(n), where n is the number of grants to be allocated. Finally, we show that the definition of HDA allows us to address the two issues mentioned above by following a pipeline approach. This is when scheduling and allocation are implemented by separate and independently running algorithms, which are just loosely coupled with- each other. We show via extensive simulation

Abstract: This paper presents a new scheduling algorithm, called Real-Time HCCA (RTH), devised to support Quality of Service (QoS) at the flow level in an IEEE 802.11e network using the Hybrid Coordinator Function (HCF) Controlled Channel Access (HCCA) function. RTH separates online activities which take place at the frame transmission timescale, from offline activities which take place at the flow lifetime timescale. Complex computations are relegated to offline activities, while online tasks are kept as simple as possible. More specifically, at admission control time, RTH computes a periodic schedule based on the well-known Earliest Deadline First algorithm for 802.11e Traffic Streams (TSs). In doing so, the Stack Resource Policy is applied to account for non-pre-emptability of frame transmissions. Furthermore, the parameters are configured so as to reduce the MAC overhead due to polling uplink TSs. On the other hand, online scheduling is enforced simply by reading the pre-computed schedule, at little or no computational cost. RTH performance is assessed in terms of the admission control limit and of the amount of channel capacity that is left for contention-based access. Under both criteria, RTH is shown to outperform the sample scheduler proposed in IEEE 802.11e.

Abstract: The IEEE 802.16 is a standard for broadband wireless communication in metropolitan area networks (MAN). To meet the QoS requirements of multimedia applications, the IEEE 802.16 standard provides four different scheduling services: unsolicited grant service (UGS), real-time polling service (rtPS), non-real-time polling service (nrtPS), and Best Effort (BE). The paper is aimed at verifying, via simulation, the effectiveness of rtPS, nrtPS, and BE (but UGS) in managing traffic generated by data and multimedia sources. Performance is assessed for an IEEE 802.16 wireless system working in point-to-multipoint (PMP) mode, with frequency division duplex (FDD), and with full-duplex subscriber stations (SSs). Our results show that the performance of the system, in terms of throughput and delay, depends on several factors. These include the frame duration, the mechanisms for requesting uplink bandwidth, and the offered load partitioning, i.e., the way traffic is distributed among SSs, connections within each SS, and traffic sources within each connection. The results also highlight that the rtPS scheduling service is a very robust scheduling service for meeting the delay requirements of multimedia applications

Abstract: Deficit Round Robin (DRR) is a scheduling algorithm which provides fair queuing at O(1) complexity. However, due to its round robin structure, its latency properties are not adequate for latency-critical applications, such as voice. For this reason, router manufacturers implement variants of the DRR algorithm which guarantee lower latencies to one (or a subset of) queue(s). In this paper we evaluate the performance of two such variants, both of which are known as Modified Deficit Round Robin, currently implemented in commercial routers. The comparison is carried out analytically, by deriving the latency and bandwidth guarantees of both algorithms, and by simulation.

Abstract: During the last few years, users ail over the world have become more and more accustomed to the availability of broadband access. This has boosted the use of a wide variety both of established and recent multimedia applications. However, there are cases where it is too expensive for network providers to serve a community of users. This is typically the case in rural and suburban areas, where there is slow deployment (or no deployment at all) of traditional wired technologies for broadband access (e.g., cable modems, xDSL). In those cases, the most promising opportunity rests with broadband wireless access technologies, such as the IEEE 802.16, also known as WiMAX. One of the features of the MAC layer of 802.16 is that it is designed to differentiate service among traffic categories with different multimedia requirements. This article focuses on mechanisms that are available in an 802.16 system to support quality of service (QoS) and whose effectiveness is evaluated through simulation

Abstract: In this paper we study performance tradeoffs of fairness algorithms for ring networks with spatial bandwidth reuse, by using two measures: (i) the fairness cycle size as a complexity measure; and (ii) the Max–Min optimal fairness criterion as a throughput measure. The fairness cycle size is determined by the number of communication links involved in every instance of the fairness algorithm (several identical fairness algorithms can be executed concurrently on the same ring). The study compares three fairness algorithms with different cycle sizes: the Global-cycle algorithm (implemented in the Serial Storage Architecture SSA) in which the cycle size is equal to the number of links N in the ring; the Variable cycle algorithm in which its cycle size changes between 1 and N links; the One-cycle, where there is a fairness cycle on every link. How the varying cycle size affects the network performance with respect to the Max-Min optimal fairness criterion is shown. The results show that for non-homogeneous traffic patterns, decreasing the fairness cycle size, while increasing the complexity, can significantly improve the performance with respect to the Max–Min optimal fairness criterion.

Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of selecting the optimal bandwidth allocation scheme for MPEG video transport on a MetaRing network. The problem is addressed by analyzing a simplified 'worst-case' network model faded by an MPEG video traffic model which only captures short range correlations. To assess to what extent the video traffic model still provides useful information, a methodology based on the busy-time distribution of the buffer is introduced. According to this methodology, the MPEG video traffic model still provides accurate results until the portion of bandwidth allocated to each MPEG video source is greater than or equal to 50% of the peak rate.

Abstract: One key requirement in the radio access design of advanced, third-generation mobile systems is the ability to accommodate a variety of service types via flexible and efficient multiple-access protocols. This paper introduces a multiple-access protocol, SIR++ (service integration for radio access), which has the potential for meeting the service requirements of speech, video, and bursty data traffic in an efficient way. SLR++ is evolved from and generalizes a former protocol, SIR, which only considered the requirements of speech and data. The paper also evaluates the buffer occupancy distribution associated with an (H.263) video connection by solving a worst case model of the system

Abstract: The traffic performance of third-generation mobile systems is greatly influenced by the multiple access protocols used in the radio access subsystem. The paper introduces an access protocol, SIR (Service Integration Radio Access), which has the potential for accommodating the requirements of speech and bursty data traffic in an efficient way. SIR is evolved from a protocol (PRMA ++) studied in the framework of a TDMA-based version of the European Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) and uses dedicated mechanisms for data bandwidth request collection and servicing.

    D. Baum, L. Lenzini Performance Analysis of SDN-specific Error Recovery Procedures 1995 Computer Communications, Elsevier, Vol. 18, No. 4, pp. 300-309, 1995.  article
Abstract: This paper evaluates and compares the performance of two error recovery schemes being applied to the European Space Data Network (SDN). The SDN comprises several heterogeneous subnetwork technologies providing end-to-end connectivity between ground and spacecraft application processes. Previous work1-3 considers the interconnection protocol architecture, for which two approaches have been proposed; these are distinguished by the type of network service used to perform subnetwork interconnection: connection-oriented and connectionless. In the former approach, error recovery from message loss or corruption is performed by each individual subnetwork along the path (step-by-step); in the latter approach, error recovery is provided on an end-to-end basis. To compare performance characteristics of the two architectures, two models are analysed, taking into account the effects of physical link errors, propagation delays of messages and their acknowledgements, finite buffer capacities on gateways, buffering of unacknowledged messages, timeout mechanisms, computation time on gateways and end systems, and fragmentation and reassembly. Numerical results show that, for the SDN environment considered, the step-by-step approach is superior to the end-to-end approach. The techniques applied are standard ones, considering a very complex scenario of different network characteristics.

Abstract: A distributed queue dual bus media access control (DQDB MAC) protocol state machine is described. The DQDB mathematical models and the tools used for their solution are introduced. The workload characterization is shown, and fairness metrics and performance indexes are defined. An analysis in underload and overload conditions is described, and the influence of the DQDB internal mechanisms is discussed. The asymptotic analysis is reported. DQDB behavior at higher speeds is analyzed

    M. Conti, E. Gregori, L. Lenzini A Comprehensive Analysis of DQDB 1991 European Transactions on Telecommunications and Related Technologies, Vol. 2(4), pp. 403-413, 1991. article
Abstract: This paper reports on an extended simulation analysis of the asynchronous part of the DQDB MAC protocol. The analysis is divided into three parts. The first and second part deal with one priority level, while in the third part we analyze DQDB behavior with multiple priority level. In the first part we study DQDB in underload conditions i.e., when the offered load is lower than the medium capacity. Our results show that in underload, the access delay is not always as low as expected. In the second part we study DQDB in overload conditions, i.e., when the offered load is higher than the medium capacity. Our results show that DQDB without the Bandwidth Balancing mechanism (BWB) is unfair and that the unfairness is dependent on the medium capacity and the bus length. When the BWB is enabled, DQDB fairness and performance, in the steady state, improve significantly. However, DQDB takes some time (depending on the BWB-MOD value) to achieve the steady state during which the node quality of service is degraded. In the third part we show that the DQDB priority mechanism is not always effective.

Abstract:The performance of multi-radio multi-channel Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) based on the IEEE 802.11 technology depends significantly on how the channels are assigned to the radios and how traffic is routed between the access points and the gateways. In this paper we propose an algorithmic approach to this problem, for which no conclusive solution has been put forward in the literature so far. The core of our scheme, called PaMeLA, consists of splitting the overall Joint Channel Assignment and Routing (JCAR) problem into a number of local optimization sub-problems, one for every node of the WMN, that are solved sequentially. Any sub-problem is formulated as an Integer Linear optimization Problem (ILP), whose optimal solution can be found using branch-and-cut in a reasonable amount of time. The final solution is obtained after a post-processing phase. In its current form, the algorithm is tailored to suit WMNs with a single gateway in a square-grid topology, which is of practical interest in many application scenarios. PaMeLA is compared through detailed packet-level simulation with several state-of-the-art JCAR algorithms and it is shown to attain better performance, in terms of the packet loss rate.

Abstract: Reduced energy consumption is a crucial aspect of mobile Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) networks, which are expected to be populated by battery-operated devices, like mobile phones and palmtops. For this reason the IEEE 802.16e, which is one of the front-runner competitors in this field, specifies a set of power saving mechanisms to be employed by the Base Station (BS) and Mobile Stations (MSs) to reduce the amount of time the latter spend with the wireless interface on. These mechanisms are classified into three class types, which are designed for different types of applications. In this paper we focus on class type I, which fits the typical requirements of best-effort traffic. With class type I, an MS with power saving enabled alternates between sleep and listening periods. The duration of the sleep periods increases by a factor 2 each time listening period ends, up to a maximum sleep window size. Since the standard does not provide guidelines for setting the above parameters, which are negotiated between the BS and MSs when setting up a power saving class, we evaluate via simulation their impact on the performance, in terms of both application-specific metric, i.e. delay or throughput depending on the type of traffic, and the amount of energy saved.

Abstract: Deployment of Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) is becoming increasingly popular due to the low-impact and low- cost features of wireless devices. This is especially true for WMNs based on IEEE 802.11 which, however, does not include native support for multi-hop relaying. This gap is being filled by the Task Group 's' of the IEEE 802.11 which has recently published an amendment in order to add mesh functions to the popular standard IEEE 802.11. Among the enhancements proposed, Mesh Deterministic Access (MDA) allows mesh routers to negotiate periodic collision-free transmission opportunities, called MDAOPs, to the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer on a hop- by-hop manner. Control messages are exchanged to advertise the reserved MDAOPs in the two-hop neighborhood. MDA lays the foundations for enabling QoS provisioning functions in IEEE 802.11s WMNs, such as end-to-end bandwidth reservation, call admission control, and traffic engineering. In this paper we study the problem of scheduling MDAOPs, which is left unspecified by the standard, and propose two baseline algorithms. Furthermore, we provide evidence that performance under MDA can be significantly degraded by the unknown interference of traffic flows outside the two-hop neighborhood. A dynamic relocation procedure is proposed in order to combat this phenomenon, thus providing traffic flows established in the WMN with stable performance. This procedure does not need any modifications to the standard MDA procedure. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that tackles this problem in the context of IEEE 802.11s. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms is evaluated by means of a packet-level simulation.

Abstract: IEEE 802.16 mesh does not include support for traffic flows with strict quality of service requirements. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end bandwidth reservation protocol (EBRP) in the backhaul of a wireless mesh network using IEEE 802.16 mesh. The distinctive feature of EBRP is that it is carried out at the medium access control (MAC) layer. Therefore, EBRP not only makes the resource reservation process extremely rapid, but it also allows the resources available to be allocated efficiently by exploiting technology-specific information available at the MAC. We present EBRP as part of a framework which also includes support for distributed call admission control (CAC). Preliminary simulation results obtained with VoIP traffic and nodes arranged in a grid topology are presented to show the effectiveness of EBRP under controlled channel conditions.

Abstract: IEEE 802.16 is a recent standard for Broadband Wireless Access networks, which includes a mesh mode operation for distributed channel access of peering nodes. In accordance with the IEEE 802.16 MAC protocol, time is partitioned into frames of fixed duration, each one divided into two sub-frames, for control and data transmission, respectively. Slots in the control sub-frame are used by nodes to negotiate the schedule of transmissions in data sub-frames, and are accessed by means of a collision-free distributed procedure, namely the mesh election procedure. In this paper, we analyze the performance of the mesh election procedure by means of extensive simulations, and identify the system configuration parameters that have the most impact on the performance of control message transmission. The analysis is carried out under the assumption that the wireless link is error-free.

Abstract: In this paper we propose a scheduling algorithm for supporting quality of service (QoS) in an IEEE 802.11e network using the HCF controlled channel access (HCCA) function. The algorithm consists of an offline procedure that generates a service schedule over a base period, and an online procedure that applies the latter to actually schedule transmission opportunities to HCCA flows
